Empty Fortresses of Self

I live in the Bible belt. Churches on every corner. I also live in a town that has a homeless population that does not seem to be shrinking. I thank God for the Baptist church and the Methodist church that opened up their buildings to provide shelter for those in need.

Yet, I am extremely frustrated by some of the other churches that are located very close to the epicenter of our homeless community. Those churches are literally running their heating units to keep the pipes warm while at the same time keeping their doors locked to keep the needy out. I am not saying they are intentionally being cruel. I am saying that they are intentionally not doing anything.

God forgive us for building empty fortresses of self instead of opening our doors for “the least of these.”
